The year was considered a transitional period within the company. Elements of the "New Generation" era were still prevelant while the "Attitude Era" was starting to slowly get ushered in. The rise of Steve Austin happened in 1997 thanks to his feud with Bret "Hitman" Hart, Shawn Michaels had a total attitude change thanks to a rough start to the year, The Undertaker began a storyline that would continue for years when his younger brother Kane got introduced to WWF audiences, and the general tone of WWF programming altered significantly thanks to mounting pressure from WCW and their flagship Monday Nitro show.
