Everyone knows Muay Thai. Far fewer people know what came before it. Known around the world as the Art of Eight Limbs, Muay Thai has become one of the most respected striking systems in modern combat sports. But long before standardized rings, boxing gloves, rounds, referees, and modern competition rules, Thailand had a much older collection of traditional fighting systems. This was Muay Boran. The word Boran means “ancient,” and Muay Boran is not actually one single fighting style. It is an umbrella term covering several traditional Thai combat systems, including Muay Korat, Muay Lopburi, Muay Chaiya, and Muay Thasao. These regional systems developed different approaches to power, precision, defense, movement, and close-range combat. Then, during the early 20th century, everything began to change. Western boxing influenced Thai fighting. Gloves replaced traditional rope bindings. Standardized rings appeared. Rounds and referees were introduced. Techniques considered too dangerous for competition were removed or prohibited. Modern Muay Thai was born. But something deeper remained inside the older traditions. The concept of Ong Muay was not simply about memorizing individual strikes. It represented a broader way of understanding combat—how a fighter moves through distance, reads an opponent, controls space, and transitions from long range to the clinch and extreme close quarters. So what was lost when an ancient battlefield system became a modern combat sport? And what can Muay Boran reveal about the roots of Muay Thai? This is the story of Muay Boran—the ancient Thai fighting traditions that existed long before modern Muay Thai became a global sport.
