He had already captured the WBO junior welterweight title and looked almost unstoppable at 140 pounds. But the real money—and the biggest opportunities—were waiting at welterweight, prompting Cotto to move up late in 2006. The transition proved smooth. Cotto halted fellow Puerto Rican Carlos Quintana, a talented but vulnerable southpaw, in five rounds, then put on a commanding performance against Germany’s Oktay Urkal, stopping him in the 11th round in what would be Urkal’s final bout.
