Outsmarting the King - High School Folktale About Power, Injustice, and Resistance
In this lesson, students will analyze how characters challenge injustice and resist authority in a traditional Vietnamese folktale. Using the story of Trang Quynh in “Stealing the King’s Cat,” students will cite evidence, explore themes about power and inequality, and compare how different trickster characters defy unfair systems. This lesson encourages critical thinking about folklore as a cultural response to real-world oppression and how wit and creativity can become tools for resistance.
