🥊 FIGHT DESCRIPTION: On December 3, 2011, inside Madison Square Garden in New York City, Puerto Rican star Miguel Cotto faced Mexican warrior Antonio Margarito in a long-awaited rematch. Their first meeting in 2008 ended in a late stoppage win for Margarito, but controversy surrounding his hand wraps added fuel to an already intense rivalry heading into the second fight. This time, Cotto came in with a clear and disciplined strategy. From the opening bell, he controlled the fight with a sharp jab, slick footwork, and precise combinations, keeping Margarito from settling into his usual pressure. Cotto repeatedly targeted Margarito’s vulnerable right eye, landing clean left hooks and uppercuts whenever the Mexican tried to close the distance. Margarito, true to form, continued to press forward and throw in volume, but much of his offense was neutralized by Cotto’s movement and accuracy. As the fight progressed, the damage to Margarito’s right eye became increasingly severe, affecting his vision and ability to respond. Meanwhile, Cotto remained composed, sticking to his game plan and refusing to get dragged into a brawl. After nine rounds, the ringside doctor ruled Margarito unable to continue due to the condition of his eye, and the fight was stopped before the tenth round began. Cotto was awarded a TKO victory, earning redemption for his previous loss, retaining his WBA super welterweight title, and finally settling one of boxing’s most heated rivalries.
